Acadia in winter is filled with surprises and hiking Great Head Trail during a snow storm with a -1F temperature is no exception. My daughter and I hiked Great Head Trail in Acadia during the large January snow storm that blanketed much of the US. This hike is a great example of why it’s always good to have a backup plan for winter adventures. We initially set out to walk the Ocean Path and make stops at Sand Beach and Thunder Hole, then we were planning to continue down the road and hike Hunters Beach Trail which is a short, easy .6 mile hike. While Schooner Head Road was plowed, the Park Loop Road was not. With the road not being plowed, we abandoned our original plans and decided to see how far we could get hiking Great Head Trail. We parked at the Schooner Head Overlook, walked the closed portion of the Schooner Head Road that leads to the Great Head Trail and hiked out to the tea house on Great Head. We started this hike in the afternoon, so we didn’t have time to do the full loop – plus it was snowing the entire hike, and I wanted to make sure we had daylight for the drive home.

ABOUT ME
Originally born and raised in NJ, my family and I needed a reset, so we took a huge leap of faith and moved closer to the place that always felt like home, Acadia National Park. I've lived close to Acadia for three years now, but before moving we visited the park every year for sixteen years. I always enjoyed hiking, but moving here has ignited a spark for hiking that I didn't know existed before. A good portion of this channel is focused on hiking in Acadia, Maine, and New Hampshire, but I also enjoy hiking in other sections of the country when time and finances allow. My hope with this channel is to inspire you to get out of your comfort zone a little and inspire you to embrace whatever your passion might be (and share some amazing trails along the way)!
