'Blackmailing' Unallowable: Hungary vetoes new EU sanctions on Russia over oil dispute with Ukraine

Описание: Hungary on Monday upheld its veto on new European Union sanctions against Russia and a major financial aid package for Ukraine, dealing a blow to the bloc’s pro-Ukraine unity on the eve of the conflict’s fourth anniversary.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told parliament that ties between Hungary and Ukraine had reached a low point, amid a dispute over oil supplies. Soon after, Slovakia said it would “reciprocally” refuse any requests from Kyiv for electricity exports until oil flows resume via the Druzhba pipeline.

Oil shipments to Hungary and Slovakia have been suspended since January 27. Ukraine said its drones struck a Russian pumping station serving the pipeline overnight, potentially escalating tensions further.

The proposed EU sanctions require unanimous approval from all 27 member states. EU officials said discussions on further measures would continue despite the setback.
