Facing your first DUI in Florida? You’re about to tackle two separate fights at once. Within 10 days of arrest, you must handle your license suspension with the DMV—six months if you blew over .08, a full year if you refused. You can either challenge the suspension or apply for a hardship license, but you can’t just show up at the DMV and ask. Enrolling in a DUI class is often a must before requesting that hardship.
Then there’s Criminal Court. Expect arraignments, pretrial conferences, plea negotiation conferences, docket soundings, and possibly a trial. It sounds intimidating, but with the right attorney, you may not even have to appear most of the time. For first offenders, there are decent odds of getting the charge reduced or dismissed—especially if you’re proactive with classes, evaluations, and any treatment recommended.
Don’t lose hope. I’ve been defending DUIs across Central Florida for over 31 years, guiding people through these exact steps. If you need help, call my office. If you’re just learning, please show support by liking or subscribing—whatever button they’ve invented to spread the word about Florida DUI law.
