Thomas Midgley Jr. was a chemical titan, responsible for two of the 20th century’s most consequential inventions: leaded gasoline and CFC refrigerants. While brilliant, both chemicals are now known for their severe environmental and public health damage.
After contracting polio, the inventor needed assistance moving. In 1944, at his home, Midgley designed an intricate, self-operated system of motorized ropes and pulleys to lift and turn himself.
It was this highly complex, mechanical design—meant to grant him independence—that brought about his sudden end. Thomas Midgley Jr. was found dead, entangled and strangled by his own ingenious mobility contraption. A dark, poetic conclusion for a man who innovated regardless of the consequences.
