UPSC Interview Is Not a Knowledge Test | Parag Gupta Sir Explains the Real Secret of High Marks
In this powerful and eye-opening session, Parag Gupta Sir, CMD of Pinnation IAS and Ex-Group A Officer, clears one of the biggest misunderstandings about the UPSC interview. Many aspirants believe the Personality Test is about proving how much they know. But the truth is different.
By the time you reach the interview stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, you have already cleared Prelims and Mains. The Commission already knows you are intelligent, hardworking, and capable. The interview is not checking your knowledge. It is checking your personality.
Parag Sir explains that the board is evaluating whether you have the maturity required to become an administrator. They are not looking for someone who sounds overly smart. They are looking for someone who sounds balanced, calm, and responsible.
Drawing from his institutional experience, Sir explains five most important qualities that matter in the interview:
First, clarity. Can you express your thoughts in a structured and organized manner? If your thinking is unclear, your decisions will also lack clarity.
Second, emotional control. The board may disagree with you or challenge your views. At that moment, your reaction matters more than your answer. A future officer must remain calm under pressure.
Third, listening skills. Many candidates fail because they are eager to speak rather than understand. Good administrators listen fully before responding.
Fourth, balanced thinking. Governance is complex. The board wants to see whether you understand multiple perspectives rather than giving extreme or rigid opinions.
Fifth, integrity and judgment. Ethical questions are not about dramatic answers. They are about thoughtful, reasoned, and responsible decisions.
The difference between average and high interview marks is rarely knowledge. It is behavior. Your tone, posture, calmness, and structure create a powerful impression.
Before your interview, ask yourself:
Can I explain my service preference clearly?
Can I respectfully disagree?
Can I admit that I do not know something?
Can I stay calm when challenged?
Prepare like a future officer, not like someone trying to impress.
