In this recording, you shall hear bells sounding Sol3, Fa3, Mi3, Re3, Do3, and Sol2.

The single belfry of Balzan contains a set of 5 bells cast by the World Famous bellfoundry Fonderie Paccard. Four of the bells were cast in 1925 to musically blend in with the bell sounding Mi3 cast in the late 18th Century by Gioacchino Trigance. The Paccard bells and the Trigance bell formed a diatonic musical scale in the key of Do3. When the new Lija bells were inaugurated in June 1947, the Balzan Parishioners craved for a larger bell then their neighbors at Lija and a new Bourdon bell was once again entrusted to Fonderie Paccard to top them all and produce a 2nd inversion chord in the Key of Sol2 and produce a dominant bourdon effect. This large bell was cast in 1948 and installed on January 1st, 1949 weighing over 4tons. It is considered to be a light profile Sol2. This set of bells is one of the most favored sets of bells on Malta and greatly acclaimed for the tonality of its bourdon bell which is the only mechanically tuned bell in the belfry.

All bells are hung fixed to their headstocks and therefore ringing is achieved by manually swinging the clapper to strike the soundbows of the bells.

This set of bells is a tribute to Maltese bellringing and the Paccard bellfoundry itself justifiably proud to have cast the largest bells in France namely those in Paris and Lisieux.
