Описание: A man went out to hire some labourers at different hours of the day on the agreement to pay a penny a day to them all, irrespective of the different hours they would have to work.

The first set of labourers resumed work at 6:00 a.m., others at 9:00 a.m., while some got to work at noon. Yet, more came at 3:00 p.m., and at 5:00 p.m. Interestingly, at the close of work at 6:00 p.m., they were all paid a penny as agreed to.

“We have been cheated,” the first set of workers protested ‘rightfully’ to their employer. “We, certainly, deserve more pay,” they argued.

Well, agreement and argument are not the same. A good argument cannot change a sealed agreement, even if such an agreement is ill-mannered.

A good argument is good but better if put forward before the agreement is sealed. An agreement is stronger than an argument. An argument does not augment weak agreement.

Nevertheless, we need to understand the pain of the 12-hour labourers. Working under the scorching sun and doing most of the work for the day couldn’t have been a joke.

It can be demoralising looking at our nation today with the economic realities of the day and the pain we are currently going through. Surely, we think we deserve something better than what we are getting.
