Kannada superstar Kichcha Sudeep has clarified that he has no plans to contest the forthcoming assembly elections and will only campaign for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The actor's statement comes amidst speculation about his possible induction into the party ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections scheduled on May 10.
Speaking to media persons at the Bengaluru airport, Sudeep said, "I will only campaign for the BJP, not contest the elections." Meanwhile, BJP sources had earlier said that the actor was likely to join the party on Wednesday in the presence of Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and other party leaders.
Kichcha Sudeep, who is known for his roles in popular Kannada movies like "Eega," "Mudinja Ivana Pudi," and "Hebbuli," is speculated to be the star campaigner for the BJP in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections. Karnataka Transport Minister B Siramulu said that the inclusion of artists and several leaders from other parties will go towards strengthening the BJP. "JDS leaders and other artists are joining BJP one after the other. Our party is strong, but with their arrival, we will be even stronger. We will get 100 per cent votes for Karnataka this time," Siramulu added.
However, amidst the buzz around Sudeep's political entry, an alleged threat letter was received by his manager Jack Manju on Wednesday, which prompted the police to register a case in the matter. The unknown person who sent the letter threatened to release Sudeep's private video on social media. The case is currently under investigation, and the police are trying to trace the sender.
The Karnataka Assembly elections have been highly anticipated, with the state witnessing a high-octane campaign by the BJP and the opposition parties. The results of the polls are crucial for both the BJP and the opposition, as Karnataka is one of the few states where the Congress is still in power. The BJP, which has been eyeing the southern state for long, has been working tirelessly to strengthen its presence in the region.
In the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party but fell short of the majority mark. The Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) joined hands to form the government, which lasted for over a year before it collapsed. In the by-elections held later, the BJP won 12 out of the 15 seats, boosting its tally in the state assembly.
With the BJP looking to oust the Congress from power, the party has been roping in high-profile personalities to bolster its campaign. Kichcha Sudeep's support is expected to be a significant boost for the BJP, given his popularity in the state.
