The second in a three-part "Perspectives on Our History" Conversation Series event convened by Baylor University, held March 9, 2021.
Dr. Ronald A. Johnson, the Ralph and Bessie Mae Lynn Chair of History in Baylor University’s History Department, hosts a panel of experts to to explore the history of slavery in Texas and the relationship between slavery and Baptist life.
This discussion follows a broader look at slavery in America and narrows our focus toward understanding the historical context of Baylor’s founding and early years. A third Conversation will concentrate on the connections between slavery and Baylor University’s founding. This historical study is similar to one undertaken by members of Baylor’s Commission on Historic Campus Representations as part of a commitment to forthrightly and fully present Baylor’s history and to foster an environment of racial equality throughout the Baylor Family.
Panelists:
Dr. Mekala Audain, Associate Professor of Nineteenth-Century U.S. History and African American History, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, The College of New Jersey
Dr. Bill J. Leonard, Founding Dean and Professor of Divinity Emeritus, School of Divinity, Wake Forest University,
