Quick Breakdown of the Background

Author - no one is for sure who wrote it. At first, they thought it was Paul but most scholars agree that it wasn’t Paul. However, the author seems to come from a Jewish background & calls Timothy his brother see 13:23.

Date Written - The date is unknown however, many scholars can agree that it was likely written before the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D. by the Romans.

Purpose - To show that Jesus is superior above everyone.

Audience - The author doesn’t clearly distinguish the audience, however, it is very possible that the intended audience may have been Jews who had converted to Christianity, struggling with going back to Judaism.

Themes - Christ’s superiority, faith, maturity, high priest, sacrifice, and endurance/perseverance.

Breakdown of Book - Hebrews 1:1 - 10:18 covers Jesus being greater than the angels, Moses, the Old Testament priesthood, and the old covenant; Hebrews 10:19 - 13:25 covers the superiority of faith.
