When you run out of PWM pins or want a PWM type of output on pins that don't have PWM support, e.g. digital pins on a microcontroller or the pins of transistors, mosfets, shift registers, etc, then BAM is a great solution. I learned about it from Kevin:

One thing I should have mentioned is that if you hook an led up to every single pin of an Arduino, be sure their total draw does not exceed the microcontroller's current handling capability. I used some 3mm green leds that only had a total draw of 80 milliamps @ 3.3V with 220ohm resistors. A good read about this is here:

Even though I start with a software-only BAM solution, the later examples utilizing one of the microcontroller's timers is probably the best way to go. This is a nice article that helped me get started with timers and is definitely worth a read:
