Hon. Asare Kwame Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A Plus, MP for Gomoa Central, has declared that no current Ghanaian law can prosecute a South African gay couple photographed kissing at the Independence Monument. Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on Saturday, June 28, A Plus addressed the viral images from the couple’s #ShowGhanaLove campaign, which have sparked widespread outrage and fueled debates on LGBTQ+ rights.
A Plus criticized the proposed 'Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,' calling its provisions—such as bans on crossdressing, sex toys, and specific sexual acts (such as oral sex) —“useless” and overly intrusive. “Who would be going around to check if someone is using a sex toy? How does that cause a problem?” he questioned, suggesting the bill’s drafter should face scrutiny. He proposed simplifying the law to only criminalize same-sex marriage, aligning with Ghana’s cultural stance without excessive overreach.
The remarks follow intense parliamentary debates among MPs and with other MPs like Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and Vincent Ekow Assafuah condemning the couple’s actions as a “desecration” of national monuments and urging the bill’s passage. The controversial bill, which aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ identities, advocacy, and activities, awaits a first reading.
