"Come all to Church, ggood people; Good people, come and pray" - the inscription on this movement is from the poem "Bredon Hill" by Alfred Edward Housman - Wood concludes this tour of Kent with the dramatic call to visit Rochester Cathedral. I am so grateful to Aaron Shows for sharing photographs from his recent visit there.
From Wood's page at Stainer & Bell:
Frederic Herbert Wood (1880–1963)
Organist of Blackpool Parish Church for 45 years, Frederic H. Wood was a composer whose contribution to the English romantic organ tradition deserves wider recognition. His colorful suites, often inspired by the countryside of Northumberland, Kent, and the English downland, reflect a deep connection to place and history. The scenes he evokes—venerable bridges, cathedrals, Roman ruins, prehistoric earthworks, and Stonehenge—are set within valleys, rivers, and orchards captured in different moods and times of day. His writing features stirring harmonies, varied textures, and a strong formal sense that anchors the pictorial elements. Wood was also known for his interest in spiritualism and ancient Egyptian language, and held a Doctor of Music from Durham University, with a distinguished career as a lecturer and adjudicator.
