The Second Battle of Ypres was fought from April 22 to May 25, 1915 during World War I. It was the second of three costly battles that was fought for control of the strategic Flemish town of Ypres that was located in western Belgium. With the First Battle of Ypres being fought the previous autumn. The second battle was unique because the Germans first use of poison gas on the Western Front. It also marked the first time a former colonial force defeated a European power in Europe. Although the gas attack opened a wide hole in the Allied line, the Germans failed to exploit that advantage.
