STORYLINE:
Pope Leo XIV visited and led prayers in a short ceremony at Madrid's Almudena Cathedral on Monday.

In his homily the pope spoke about the symbolism of the discovery of Madrid's image of the Holy Mother the Virgen Almudena behind a collapsed wall.

And afterwards Leo offered the highest Papal honor "The Golden Rose" to the Virgen Almudena.

He later visited the home of Real Madrid Football Club, the Santiago Bernabeu where around 80,000 people burst into wild cheers as he entered the arena in an electric golf cart.

This was a meeting with members of dioceses of Madrid, Alcala de Henares and Getafe.

The sporting theme was maintained with a performance by young people interpretating scoring penalties with the support of the local and religious community.

Leo said that the event was "an amazing goal" for the Madrid Church.

Earlier Leo met with survivors of clergy sexual abuse in Madrid and delivered a historic address to Spain's parliament on Monday.
