The dynamic duo of Brownells Gun Techs Keith Ford and Steve Ostrem is back at the Rock Island Auction Co. to show us an example of more recent military small arms history - the M45A1 CQBP (Close Quarter Battle Pistol). Often called the "Rail Gun," due to its big under-receiver Picatinny accessory rail, the M45A1 was the last 1911 made for the U.S. military. They were ordered from Colt by the Marine Corps in 2012 to equip Force Recon units... But then part of the order was cancelled. Colt was allowed to sell the guns they had on hand to the civilian market. The M45A1 is pretty much a modern match 1911: Commander hammer, beavertail safety, extended thumb safety, Novak night sights, G10 grips, and a Flat Dark Earth Cerakote finish. M45A1s were issued with Wilson Combat #47 magazines. Alas, the CQBP didn't last long in service. Polymer pistol haters, don't read this: the M45A1 is being phased out in favor of Glock 19s. Good news: aside from leftover Marine contract guns on the civilian market, Colt also sells a commercial edition of the M45A1.
