Discover the timeless story of the Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple — a marvel of devotion, heritage, and human determination.

Nestled near the serene KRS Backwaters at Hosa Kannambadi in Mandya district, Karnataka, the Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple is a breathtaking example of 12th-century Hoysala architecture. Built during the golden era of the Hoysalas, around the same time as the famous Chennakesava Temple of Somanathapura, this temple once stood proudly in the historic village of Kannambadi.

However, fate took a dramatic turn in the early 20th century.

When the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam was conceived in 1909, the village of Kannambadi — along with its magnificent temple — was marked for submersion. By 1930, the entire village disappeared beneath the rising waters of the reservoir. For over 70 long years, the Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple remained hidden underwater, surfacing only occasionally during severe droughts, most notably around the year 2000, offering fleeting glimpses of its forgotten glory.

What followed was one of the most remarkable heritage revival stories in India.

Moved by devotion and responsibility towards history, the Khoday Foundation, under the guidance of renowned philanthropist Sri Hari Khoday, took on the monumental task of saving the temple. With government approvals in place, a bold decision was made — the temple would be relocated and rebuilt stone by stone at a safer location.

Before dismantling began, the temple was meticulously documented. The team captured over 16,000 photographs, detailed videos, and precise measurements from every angle. Each stone was carefully marked, numbered, and cataloged. A sacred Bhoomi Pooja was performed, and the reconstruction journey began.

Skilled masons, trained artisans, and master sculptors — including experts from Tamil Nadu — were brought together to revive the temple using traditional methods. Damaged stones and missing idols were faithfully recreated, ensuring that the original Hoysala craftsmanship remained untouched in spirit and form.

After nearly a decade of dedicated effort, what once lay submerged and forgotten emerged again — standing tall and radiant on the shores of the backwaters at Hosa Kannambadi.

Today, the Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple is not just a place of worship — it is a living symbol of faith, architectural brilliance, and human perseverance. Framed by calm waters, lush greenery, and divine silence, the temple attracts devotees, historians, and travelers alike, reminding us that true devotion can even conquer time and water.
