Ants climbing a tree (ma yi shang shu) is a classic Sichuan dish that is basically sautéed vermicelli (glass noodles) with spicy minced meat, but the reason why it's called "ants climbing a tree" is because supposedly 800 years ago in ancient China, a woman made this dish for her mother-in-law who was sick in bed and mistakenly thought the ground meat was ants in the plate. Later people gave this dish the name “ants climbing a tree” as the vermicelli looks like tree branches and the scallions look like tree leaves. 😆 Let me know in the comments if you know any food names with an interesting name or story!
Ingredients:
120g ground meat (any meat: pork or beef or chicken)
60g mung bean vermicelli or sweet potato vermicelli
1 scallion
4-5 garlic cloves
4g ginger
1 tbsp chili bean sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp (2.5ml) dark soy sauce
1g salt
3g sugar
1g Sichuan peppercorn powder
1 tsp (5ml) sesame oil
