How to write the names and formulas for molecular compounds: explanation, examples, and practice with answers.
To write the name or formula for molecular compounds we’ll use the Periodic Table and follow some simple rules. Because consists of two non-metals we don't need to balance the charges between atoms. Instead, we'll use prefixes to indicate the number of each element.

-- Keys for Naming Molecular Compounds:--
1. Write the name for both elements.
2. Change the ending of the second element to ide.
3. Place prefixes in front of each element based on the number of atoms present.
4. The prefix 'mono' is only used on the second non-metal in the chemical formula.
5. There shouldn't be two vowels in a row. For example, when you have 'mono' in front of 'oxide' it is written 'monoxide', not 'monooxide'.
-- Keys for Writing Formulas for Molecular Compounds--
1. Write the element symbol for both elements.
2. Place a subscript after each element according to its prefix.
Note: Don’t write the subscript '1'.
--Prefixes--
Mono = 1
Di = 2
Tri = 3
Tetra = 4
Penta = 5
Hexa = 6
Hepta = 7
Octa = 8
Non = 9
Dec = 10
