In February 1997, The Bon-Accord Silver Band celebrated the remarkable life of it’s founder, Stewart Watson MBE, with a Gala concert in the Music Hall. Hosted by the legendary Neil Meldrum, the concert featured the brass band’s of Aberdeen that played such a pivotal role in Stewart’s extraordinary musical career.
The third segment features the Bon-Accord Silver ‘B’ Band, under the direction of Eric Kidd. Their Programme was:
(Excerpt from Concert Programme)
Men of Harlech – Trad arr. G Langford
Respected for his concert programmes, ‘Men of Harlech’ was one of Stewart’s most popular inclusions on and off the contest platform.
Chanson D’amour – W Shanklin arr. D Ashmore
Made famous by the group Manhattan Transfer, ‘Chanson D’Amour’ almost became the Bon-Accord Silver Band’s signature tune. It was just one of those pieces that Stewart played, played and played! Although becoming not so popular with the band, Stewart knew what the public wanted and even included it in a concert programme at the Bellway Band of the Year contest. The adjudicator wrote ‘this is like falling off a log for you’. Subsequently the band took 2nd prize and beat the then Scottish Champions, the Whitburn Burgh Band.
All through the Night – Trad arr. G Langford
Like ‘Men of Harlech’, ‘All through the Night’, a traditional Welsh Air, was another one of Stewart’s popular concert items. The piece has certainly stood the test of time, still featuring in the band’s concert programmes today.
Final Movement from ‘Little Suite No1 for Brass Band – M Arnold
For some 27 years Stewart was a tutor for the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland, finally becoming Director before his retirement. Commissioned for the band, Stewart was the first ever Music Director to conduct ‘Little Suite No 1 for Brass Band’ in a venue to too far from here, Harlaw Academy. The Bon-Accord Silver ‘B’ band, current 4th Section Scottish Champions, took 3rd place with this piece in the 1995 Scottish Championships.
