4:01 Why do you need to get published as a medical student?
In order to get published as a medical student you have to understand why publications and getting published is important. The reasons include: to contribute to the medical literature, to provide information to others around the world and to improve patient care and treatments. You can also improve your skill set and demonstrate an interest and commitment to a particular specialty when you get published as a medical student.
5:02 How do you get published as a medical student?
In order to get published as a medical student you can partake in essay competitions which the Royal Colleges do advertise. Also the Student BMJ and the BMJ have competitions from time to time. Letters to the editor can help you get published as a medical student. Opinion pieces are also useful to help you get published as a medical student.
Quality Improvement Projects or QIPS can also help you get published as a medical student. Remarx say: SSCs or Student Selected Components help you carry out a project under supervision, an iBSc and research societies can also help you get published as a medical student.
8:54 My publications on my LinkedIn profile will give you an idea of how you can start to get published as a medical student.
12:30 Other things to consider when you are thinking about getting published as a medical student:
1. The impact factor which is: the number of times the ‘average article’ in a journal is cited in a specific year. It measures importance or rank of a journal by calculating the times it's articles are cited. If you want to know more about it/how it is calculated then you can check out this link: https://researchguides.uic.edu/if/impact
2. Cost: some journals require you to pay if your research gets accepted and then published.
3. You can submit to more than one journal when you are trying to get published as a medical student – but at DIFFERENT times. Submitting to multiple journals could result in issues with copyright which could impact your publication. Wait to hear a response from one journal before moving onto another. REMARX- say that publications can exist in different formats, so it is important to look into this. Some journals will publish case studies, posters, and letters to the editor whereas others do not. Make sure your research is in the format that the journal will accept.
13:20 Final thoughts from REMARX: publications come in time. Clinical and academic advice states that producing good quality work that you are interested in and proud of, rather than chasing a point(s) for your CV, is a fundamental. Additionally, clinicians/academics often say they do not want to supervise students who are only interested in getting their name on a paper, they would want to develop another curious mind that has an interest in their speciality.
