Although not an orthodox believer, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) left a keen legacy of music to the Anglican church, and, of his organ works, Rhosymedre, is one of the most loved. Composed in 1920, the prelude is based on a hymn tune written by Anglican priest John David Edwards (1805–1885) and named for a village in Wales. The hymn tune is heard twice throughout the piece, first in the tenor range and then in the soprano voice. Vaughan Williams intertwines the hymn tune with a lyrical countermelody of his own, heard alone at the beginning and end. The piece perfectly captures it's other moniker, Lovely, and the lilting 'pastoral' mood is much in keeping with Vaughan Williams' compositional style.
Born in Gloucestershire, the music of Vaughan Williams is almost inextricably linked with the West Country, around which he collected many folk songs. It therefore makes complete sense to record this performance on the gorgeous 'Milton' Organ in Tewkesbury Abbey (sampled by Hauptwerk by @beautyinsound). I hope you enjoy!
