The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says one of its deputies was killed in a crash Wednesday evening.
It happened at the intersection of East Lake Road and Forelock Road in Tarpon Springs.
During a news conference, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Deputy Michael Magli was killed when a "reckless driver" crashed into him and his SUV, killing him. Sheriff Gualtieri says Magli was outside his SUV putting up "stop sticks" to slow down the wanted driver when he was pinned under his car.
The sheriff says the driver, Robert Allen Holzaepfel, was arrested. Gualtieri says Holzaepfel appears to have been drunk driving with a suspended license and had 16 prior arrests.
Authorities have blocked traffic in both directions on East Lake Road, and they're urging drivers to avoid the area altogether. Sheriff Gualtieri says the road will remain closed until sometime Thursday morning.
