In a previous video I discussed why having a job, even a good job is no longer enough to get ahead financially. The difference between the baby boomer generation, generation x and where we are at today is so drastically different that to try to compare the generation of our parents to a young adult today would be a great injustice.
Many adults can no longer afford to purchase a home, and the homeless population is rising faster than I have ever seen.
So how does one compete, and get ahead and have success in one of the harshest economic environments in over a century.
One of the key solutions and probably the most important solution is to focus on increasing your income.
The most common financial advice out there, and by the way I know you have heard this.
It’s not much you make its how much save that matters.
I’m not saying that advice is bad. Money management is crucial to financial success, but there is a HUGe flaw in that piece advice in that it does not encourage people to expand their income. It doesn’t encourage someone to try to expand their way of life.
Let me ask you guys this this. What is going to happen to someone financially in the long-run if they save money, but do not try to increase their income?
Well consider this: This dollar I’m holding what’s happening to it? Well we saw in the last video related to this series that our dollar continues to lose purchasing power. Therefore, in this example even though this person is saving money and being financial responsible under conventional financial wisdom they are likely to become poorer overtime, because their income is not keeping up with inflation.
This next piece of information is crucial for you and I to understand if we want to get ahead financially.
It doesn’t’ matter how much we save if our income isn’t high enough. If our income isn’t high enough we are not going to be able to save and invest enough money to keep up with the rising cost of prices.
Our culture spends so much time focused on saving money that they never focus on the much more important aspect of working to increase their income. Instead of trying to live abundantly and expanding our means we try to live below our means and live off scraps. Because the average person’s income is so low they have a hard time investing enough money each year to keep up with rising costs, and invest enough for retirement.
It is unbelievable that school doesn’t teach this. It drives me insane. When I speak to college students about money management and investing I say those things are great, but the most important thing you can do to propel your financial situation is to focus on increasing your income throughout your life. Never stop trying to increase your annual income.
I tell them straight up that the degree they are getting will probably not land them a job that pays them enough to get ahead financially in economic client. That used to worked for their parents, but it will not work for them. Do you think the college will them this? No way.
Stop blaming your employer for not paying you enough.
You can have more, do more be more, but you have to realize that we can’t do that just by pinching pennies the rest of our lives and living off an income that is not keeping up with inflation. We have to have bigger goals in mind. Saving money is a defensive stragegy, making more money is an offensive stragtegy. In order to win the war on finances we need both a good defense and a strong offense. In my opinion too many people are playing defense and they can’t figure out why they can’t get ahead in todays world.
How much better would your life be right now if your income was higher?
How sooner could you retire if you invested that extra money. How many years would it shave off your working years? 5 years? 10 years?
How much quicker could you pay off debt?
How much more could you give to your family and community if you had more money?
What would you buy that you have always wanted, but never could afford?
