The verbs ไป (bpai) and มา (maa) are used after a number of verbs or verb phrases as direction markers to indicate whether the action of the verb is directed towards or away from the speaker.

Common Verbs Followed by ไป (bpai) and มา (maa):
เดิน (doen): to walk
เดินไป (doen bpai) means "to walk away."
เดินมา (doen maa) means "to walk towards."
กลับ (klap): to return
ย้าย (yáai): to move
โทร (thoo): to telephone
เอา/พา (ao/phaa): to take
เปลี่ยน (plian): to change
ส่ง (sòng): to send

These verbs occur only with ไป (bpai):
หาย (hǎai): to disappear
ลืม (luem): to forget
