The Past in Pictures, Newcastle in 1982

Описание: It was August 1982 when Newcastle United, toiling in football's second tier and going nowhere, pulled off one of the most stunning transfers in the club's history.

An England captain and twice former European footballer of the year, there wasn't a bigger name in the game than superstar Kevin Keegan.

Later that month as the sun blazed over Tyneside, Keegan made his Newcastle debut at a feverish St James’ Park, scoring in a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers and sending the capacity crowd into meltdown.

Our photograph of newly-arrived Keegan signing autographs for star-struck young fans in 1982 is just one we've pulled from the ChronicleLive archive which recalls some of what was going on around Newcastle 40 years ago.

Elsewhere, we see rock royalty the Rolling Stones performing in concert at St James' Park; the new Metro bridge at Byker in the city's East End; and the TV actors, who would soon become stars, filming an upcoming comedy-drama series which would have a strong Geordie theme, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.

In the news that year, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic, and servicemen from across the North East were part of a massive task force that sailed south to finally re-take the islands with the loss of 258 British lives in a two-month campaign.

It was a time when the subject of nuclear weapons loomed large, and a women’s peace camp, 30,000-strong, descended on RAF Greenham Common, in Berkshire, to protest against the siting of missiles there.

The Mary Rose - Henry VIII’s flagship which had sunk in 1545 - was raised from the depths after four and a half centuries.

And in London, an intruder called Michael Fagan was somehow able to break into Buckingham Palace and find the Queen’s bedroom where he spent 10 minutes talking to the monarch.

In world news, the long-time Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev died of a heart attack; Italy won the football World Cup which took place in Spain, and Carlos the Jackal launched a wave of terrorist attacks in France.

Meanwhile, on the entertainment front, TV viewers welcomed the launch of Channel 4 and the Liverpudlian sitcom, Brookside, which ran until 2003.

In technology, the new Sinclair ZX Spectrum was a milestone moment in home computing, while the first CD players went on sale in Japan.

In pop music, the likes of Buzz Fizz, Human League and Survivor all hit the upper reaches of the charts.

At the cinema, some of the year's hit movies included ET, Chariots of Fire, and An Officer and a Gentleman.

And on TV, there were debuts in 1982 for The Young Ones, 'Allo 'Allo, and a ground-breaking rock and pop show filmed in Newcastle called The Tube.
