On May 1, 1960, while conducting an overflight of the Soviet Union in a U-2 spy plane, Francis Gary Powers was shot down. He was captured, tried, and sentenced to ten years in a Soviet prison. After 18 months, he was released in a prisoner swap for Soviet spy, Rudolph Abel. The whole episode is depicted in the movie Bridge of Spies.
For years, Powers was blamed for the incident, with some calling him out as a traitor. But what is the truth? His son, Gary Powers Jr. has spent a lifetime clearing his fathers name, and exposing the lies tarnished his reputation.
