CONVAIR XF-92A MODEL 7002 Delta Wing Research Jet at Muroc

Описание: The XF-92A (Convair Model 7002) was the world's first jet aircraft to fly with the radical delta-wing configuration pioneered by Germany's Dr. Alexander Lippisch. Although German research had included thick airfoils, the XF-92A (Convair Model 7002) used thin airfoils. Convair used the knowledge learned from the XF-92 to design the delta-wing F-102, the U.S. Air Force’s first operational supersonic interceptor. Convair made a series of delta-wing combat aircraft in the 1950s, including the F-102, F-106, B-58, and the less successful XF2Y-1 Sea Dart.
The USAF accepted the turbojet-powered XF-92A prototype to conduct delta-wing flight research. The sole XF-92A was flown by Air Force and NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) test pilots from 1948 until its nose gear collapsed during landing in October 1953. It is said the XF-92A was assembled using available parts from other aircraft, including a nosegear from a Bell P-63 Kingcobra.
Top speed is listed as around 715 mph. The XF-92A provided research capabilities in the transonic region in level flight.
The XF-92A was delivered to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in 1969 from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn.
