Between 1986 and 1989, four young couples were attacked along Virginia's Colonial Parkway and surrounding areas. Eight people in total. Cathleen Thomas and Rebecca Dowski were strangled and had their throats cut. David Knobling and Robin Edwards were shot execution-style. Keith Call and Cassandra Hailey vanished completely and have never been found. Annamaria Phelps and Daniel Lauer were found decomposed in the woods six weeks after they disappeared.
For nearly 40 years, investigators had over 100 suspects and zero arrests. Then in 2024, advances in forensic DNA technology allowed investigators to re-examine evidence that had been untouchable for decades. The DNA matched a local fisherman named Alan Wade Wilmer Sr., a man the FBI had interviewed and cleared in the 1980s after he passed a polygraph test. He died in 2017, and his DNA was only on file because a medical examiner followed routine autopsy procedure.
As of January 2026, Wilmer has been linked to at least six murders. Two victims have never been found. And the families are now fighting to change the laws that prevent his DNA from being searched against other unsolved cases nationwide.
