Oil Paint Mixing Tutorial - Cadmium Reds and different Blues

Описание: Ever wonder how to choose which color to start with? This color mixing tutorial explores how knowing the characteristics of paint pigments can inform your color choices.

We start off analyzing the three cadmium reds, 1) cadmium vermillion, 2) cad red medium, and 3) cad red deep. We look at how the color appears straight from the paint tube, then how the paint shifts in color temperature when mixed with lead white. Then each cadmium red is mixed with ultramarine blue and then each cad red is mixed with cadmium yellow medium.

By comparing how each mixes, you learn a lot about how these pigments shift in color temperature and color saturation. This better informs all of your future paint color mixing decisions.

In addition to exploring the cadmium red colors, we spent time exploring blues. This is important right now because in my Master Copy Class, this term we are copying Paul Cezanne’s still life painting “Peppermint Bottle”. And there are a ton of blues and greens in this painting.

Getting familiar with the variety of blue pigments available is important. We explored pthalo blue, Prussian blue, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, and cerulean blue.
