Attention and ADHD
The conventional story is that stimulants help reduce ADHD symptoms by boosting dopamine and norepinephrine and enhancing attention circuits in the prefrontal cortex. But a recent, very large study using functional MRI data in 8-11 year olds found that stimulants strongly activated arousal networks, and reward networks but had no direct effect on attention. This implies that stimulants improve attention only indirectly, and is prompting researchers to identify agents that might more powerfully improve attention.
Generic Medications
Genetic medications have made many agents affordable and in the US more than 80% of prescriptions are filled with generics. While the FDA mandates that the active substance must be the same, fillers are allowed to differ, as can the shape, size and color of the pill. Also, the FDA allows generics to perform within the range of 80% to 125% of the brand name regarding the time to peak action, and total amount absorbed. These variations in drug delivery to the body are particularly important for medications like stimulants for ADHD, and benzodiazepines for anxiety, where the behavioral effects are immediate and tied to the how much and how quickly the drug is binding to receptors.
