For my first attempt skim coating a wall was in one of our rental units that had cracked and old plaster. I applied skim coat (Plus 3 joint compound) to smooth out the old plaster before priming and painting. After skim coating, I evened out the rather large ridges (of a beginner) with a scraper, sanded with a pole sander and a block sander, then did some wet sanding and final skim coat patching to achieve a very smooth finish. It looked fantastic after painting!
