“Hatikvah” (“The Hope”) is the national anthem of the State of Israel. Its lyrics were written in 1878 by Naftali Herz Imber, a Jewish poet from Zolochiv (then in Austrian Poland, now Ukraine). Originally titled “Tikvatenu” (“Our Hope”), the poem expressed the Jewish people’s long-standing aspiration to return to their ancestral homeland and restore national sovereignty after nearly two millennia of exile.
In 1882, Imber emigrated to Ottoman-ruled Palestine, where his poem gained popularity among early Jewish settlers. In 1888, Samuel Cohen set the poem to a melody he knew from Romania, which ultimately traced back to the 16th-century Italian song “La Mantovana,” composed by Giuseppe Cenci. This melody spread widely across Europe in various folk traditions and was also used by Bedřich Smetana in his symphonic poem “Vltava” (The Moldau).
“Hatikvah” gradually became the anthem of the Zionist movement. Although sung at Zionist Congresses beginning in the late 19th century, it was formally adopted as the official anthem of the Zionist Organization in 1933 at the Eighteenth Zionist Congress in Prague.
When the State of Israel was established in 1948, “Hatikvah” was unofficially proclaimed the national anthem. However, it was only formally recognized in November 2004, when the Knesset amended the Flag and Coat-of-Arms Law (renamed the Flag, Coat-of-Arms, and National Anthem Law) to officially designate it as Israel’s national anthem.
The official version consists of the first stanza and refrain of Imber’s original nine-stanza poem. The central theme reflects the enduring hope of the Jewish people to live as a free nation in the Land of Israel — “to be a free people in our land, the land of Zion and Jerusalem.”
