Here’s a selection of the latest fairy tale films that are too dark for young children.
“Pan’s Labyrinth”, also known as “El Laberinto Del Fauno” (2006), is a Spanish-Mexican fairy tale, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. The story takes place in Spain, during the summer of 1944, five years after the Civil War. The main character is Ofelia, the young and lonely stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer. During the night, Ofelia creates imaginary worlds to escape the cruel reality of the war. One night, she meets a fairy who takes her to a labyrinth garden. There, they meet an old faun. The creature tells the young girl she’s a princess from a kingdom in the underworld. The faun also says she can only ascend the throne if she has completed three gruesome tasks.
