China and Russia vetoed
a US-led bid at the UN to
toughen sanctions on
the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)
after its missile launches.
China’s envoy added that
additional sanctions
would also have
a greater humanitarian impact
especially against the backdrop of
emerging COVID-19 in the DPRK.
The vote came a day after
Pyongyang fired three missiles,
including one thought to be
its largest intercontinental
ballistic missile (ICBM),
on the heel of US President Biden's Asia tour.
A resolution needs
nine "yes" votes and no vetoes
by the permanent members of
Russia, China, France, the UK
or the US to be adopted by
the UN Security Council.
Russia, another
permanent member that vetoed,
stated its stance on sanctions.
