Allen Philpott, former RAF Engineer & Instructor (C130, Nimrod & VC10 ) very kindly gave us an in-depth tour of the Power Bay and electrical systems of XM655 including the Merz Price units.
Serious corrosion was found in the units meaning they have to be removed from the aircraft and rebuilt with new wiring, cue Tim Deeley beginning the strip down and testing and repair of a removed unit.
We also get a close up look at the AP Manuals for XM655 and a fuel contents amplifier, one for each of the 14 fuel tanks on the aircraft.
It's incredible to think that it took just 11 years to go from the first flight of the Lancaster Bomber in 1941 to the first flight of the VX770, the prototype Vulcan bomber in 1952.
XM655 is an Avro Vulcan B Mk2, and the youngest Vulcan in existence (the third to last produced; XM656 and XM657 have both been scrapped). Delivered to 9 squadron at RAF Cottesmore in November 1964, she transferred to the Waddington Wing in January 1968.
