Where Silage Starts to Fail - Feed-Out is the Final Test
Silage isn’t truly preserved when the bunker is closed - it’s tested when it’s opened.
At feed-out, oxygen returns. Dormant organisms wake up, yeasts begin consuming sugars and lactic acid, pH rises, and aerobic spoilage takes over. Heat is the first warning sign. By the time mould is visible, valuable dry matter and energy have already been lost.
In this video we break down:
• Why yeasts are the first trigger of feed-out failure
• How oxygen entry at the face, shoulders and cracks drives losses
• Why rough, undercut faces accelerate spoilage
• How packing density months earlier determines stability today
• Why drier silage heats and deteriorates faster
• How feed-out losses silently reduce intake, energy density and palatability
Feed-out is not a passive phase. It is an active management point where oxygen exposure, removal rate and face integrity decide whether silage is fed - or wasted.
Silage is preserved in the bunker.
But it is protected at the face.
