FluidNC (based off of grbl, for the ESP32) now has the features needed to implement fully automatic toolchanges, as well as a tool length table. Note that the tool length table is not persisted across controller restarts, nor is the previously held tool.
The logic for the toolchange is implemented entirely in gcode, using conditional "O" codes based off of LinuxCNC's implementation. You can see the toolchange macro here: https://gist.github.com/dymk/d80db2cf...
This demonstrates a simple 3 tool operation - roughing a pocket with 1/4" endmill, finishing the bottom and walls with a 1/8" endmill, and chamfering edges with a 90 degree chamfer mill.
