Rising tensions between the US and Iran have spiked global crude oil prices by nearly 12%. Iran’s threat to block the Strait of Hormuz—a critical route for about 20% of the world’s oil supply—has sent shockwaves across international energy markets.

For India, which imports 88% of its crude oil, this is particularly concerning. Daily imports of 2.5–2.7 million barrels pass through Hormuz from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait, supplying crude, LPG, and LNG.

Currently, India has a strategic petroleum reserve for about 25 days of crude oil demand, but prolonged disruption would force the country to source oil from alternate suppliers at higher costs. Even a $1 increase per barrel could add ~$2 million annually to India’s import bill.

The global implications are equally serious: higher transportation costs, rising fuel prices, and potential inflation in essential commodities could affect economies worldwide.
