Running in Water (plus underwater treadmill hack) from BJ Gaddour, former Men's Health fitness director!
This year I turn 40 and I’ve been rebuilding my gait in the water in hopes of sprinting pain-free on land. Here are just a handful of drills I’ve been doing including walking, marching & running.
I have a long history of knee injuries from my youth so training in a lower gravity fluid environment is allowing me to fix my alignment & improve my mechanics with dramatically less impact forces & faster recovery times. Plus the anti-inflammatory compression is literally healing my older body.
I particularly enjoy my underwater treadmill hack using a resistance band wrapped around my hips that’s anchored to a weight on land. This creates a more natural forward lean and promotes more hip flexion and extension.
I recommend a 4/4 rhythmic breathing tempo: inhale through the nose for 4 steps & then exhale through the mouth for 4 steps. You can even incorporate multi-directional shuttle runs in the more shallow ends of the pool.
If you have a history of joint pain or arthritis, I highly recommend these drills. They’ve been an absolute game-changer for me.
