I bought a 69€ dental vacuum former on Black Friday and decided to test how far I could push it. This machine is normally used by dentists to make retainers, aligners, and mouthguards, but I wanted to see what happens when a maker gets hold of one.
After a quick explanation of how vacuum forming works, I tested it for the first time on resin printed Barbie legs, an ABS 3D print of half a mouth, and then became chaotic-evil. Using vacuum-formed molds, I made a candle featuring litchis, Barbie legs, creepy children’s teeth, and a rubber duck. and lit it on fire because it’s Christmas.
If you’re into DIY, maker projects, 3D printing, mold making, prop making, or weird tools, this video shows why vacuum forming might be one of the most underrated (and dangerous) tools you can buy on a budget.
