Tragedy fell upon the Clyde community earlier this month when troopers were dispatched to FM 18 and County Road 243. After their vehicle was struck by a train at a railroad crossing, 19-year-old Brileigh Dailey and 16-year-old Kyler Dailey were pronounced dead at the scene.
In response, Clyde Mayor Stephen Steele is seeking to rename a portion of the road to honor the siblings and promote railroad safety.
"We are trying to get it called 'Brileigh and Kyler Dailey Memorial Highway.' I have spoken with their dad, Bill Dailey. I have known Bill for years. He is a fantastic individual. He fully supports this. He believes that this would be a great memorial for his kids," Steele said. "We are working with Senator Phil King's office to rename the portion of FM 18 from 603 to 604. We want this to have a dual purpose. I would like to memorialize the kids because they were so important to the community. I also want this to be a constant reminder that we need to be very cognizant when we're crossing railroad tracks."
Beyond honoring the siblings, attention is also turning to preventing another tragedy. KTXS asked, "What new safety measures are being implemented in the area to ensure that a railroad crossing death does not happen again?”
Mayor Steele emphasized that efforts to address safety concerns are already underway.
"It happened so close to Clyde. It took place right outside of the city's limits, so we just want to help in every way that we can to come up with an alternative," he said. "We are reaching out to county officials. We are reaching out to state officials. We are working directly with the railroad to come up with some solutions and figure out how to fix that particular railroad crossing. At the same time, we're looking at other railroad crossings in our immediate area to see what we need to look at before it becomes an issue."
Clyde resident Casie Griffin is among those in favor of the proposed memorial.
"My son was Kyler's teammate. If he was my son, I'd want everyone to remember him," Griffin said. "They were great kids and I'm all for it."
The road renaming is expected to be completed at the start of 2027. Mayor Steele is encouraging residents to submit letters in support of or in opposition to the proposal. He shared that all perspectives are welcome, as they will give lawmakers a better understanding of local viewpoints. Letters may be handed directly to Mayor Steele or dropped off at Clyde City Hall.
