A place of cruel judgement, horrid incarceration and very public executions. The Galleries stands on a site dating back to 600AD and is the base for Nottingham’s original Saxon settlement. The first written record of the site as a prison dates from 1449 it was rebuilt in 1769 to 1772. Additional wings were built in 1820 to 1840. The courts were largely rebuilt in 1876 following a major fire. The Victorians closed the jail in 1878 due to its appalling conditions.
The Galleries of justice was an all in one building, where criminals could be held, tried and if needed, executed very quickly on the same site.
In modern times it has acted as a court room and today, it houses the National Justice Museum.
