How To Stay Humble In A World Obsessed With Ego & Pride – Like The Prophet ﷺ | Ustadh Hisham

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“And do not walk upon the earth arrogantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.”
— Surah Al-Isra (17:37)
Humility (tawāḍuʿ) is not just a virtue — it's a form of worship. It is the state of a heart that knows its Lord and recognizes its own limitations. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the most honored of creation, yet he ﷺ lived with the utmost humility: mending his own clothes, eating with the poor, sitting among his companions without seeking special treatment.

He ﷺ said:

“Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will raise him in status.”
— [Sahih Muslim]
Humility leads to sincerity, gratitude, and closeness to Allah, while arrogance leads to downfall — as it did with Iblis. The Qur'an warns:

“I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right.”
— Surah Al-A'raf (7:146)
In the age of social media, attention-seeking and vanity are disguised as confidence and success. But the Prophet ﷺ showed that the greatest strength lies in submitting to Allah and treating others with gentleness, even when power is in your hands.

The best way to combat ego is to remember who we are before Allah — and to follow the example of the one whom Allah described as a “mercy to the worlds” (21:107), yet who lived with simplicity, servitude, and humility.
