Listen to the eveness of the beats and the gradual increase & decrease in speed with no change in volume to achive a perfect roll.
One of the best ways to practice this and all the rudiments is to concentrate on the eveness of the beats,bringing the stix up to the same hight,practice slowly,never go for speed (closing the rudiment) until you have mastered the rudiment at a moderate speed.Listen to him play the Three Camps with accents and a perfect roll underneath.Many Great Drummers use these rudiments when playing drum solos.Listen to Louie Bellson who was a master of the long Roll with his great power even with the rudiment closed.Check him out here on this Site.So Get Practicing!
