Oil Light On After Oil Change (Top Causes And Solutions). In this video I will talk about why your oil light stays on after an oil change.
The oil light usually turns on when there are issues or faults in the oil circulation system. However, after an oil change, the light can stay on due to disrupted oil circulation during the oil change. In this case, a simple reset will turn the light off.
Depending on the vehicle, there are different ways to reset the oil light manually. You can turn on the ignition then step on the accelerator and brake pedals simultaneously without turning on the engine, or press the Reset or Info buttons in the instrument panel. To be sure, check the manufacturer's manual for specific instructions on resetting the oil light, as the methods may vary.
If the oil light still stays on after the reset, here are the possible causes and their solutions:
Low oil pressure
If, after an oil change, the oil level does not reach the level recommended by the manufacturer, the oil pressure might be low enough to trigger the oil light. Use a dipstick when the engine is cold and top up the oil to the required level.
An unlubricated, clogged, or poorly installed oil filter can also hinder oil flow and cause the pressure to drop. It is advisable to install a new filter during an oil change, and as you do this, lubricate the rubber seal with fresh oil and ensure you install it properly.
Debris buildup on oil pump
Over time, debris, soot, and dirt particles can contaminate the oil and accumulate around the oil pump. Though not common, this might disrupt oil circulation around the engine system, affecting engine efficiency. Debris on the oil pump will cause the oil light to stay on. Since any repairs that involve the oil pump require mechanical knowledge, you should take your car to a mechanic to inspect and remove the debris.
Faulty sensors
If you did everything right during the oil change but the oil light is still on, it might be because the pressure sensors are damaged or faulty and are recording incorrect readings. Damaged oil light sensors can also cause the oil light to stay on even after an oil change. Take your car to a qualified mechanic to inspect and replace faulty sensors if necessary.
The oil light is among the early signs of engine damage, so it is crucial to determine its cause in time and have it checked. Do not ignore the light as engine damage can be more expensive to fix.
