Recorded in Spring 2022, this webcast from the Oxford Longevity Project explores how autophagy and mitophagy — the cellular processes that clear damaged components and maintain energy balance — are essential for heart health, resilience, and longevity.
Introduced by Professor Denis Noble CBE FRS, Co-founder of the Oxford Longevity Project and Emeritus Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford, the event features keynote presentations by two of the world’s leading cardiovascular researchers: Dr Junichi Sadoshima (Rutgers New Jersey Medical School) and Professor Robin Choudhury (University of Oxford).
Organised in association with Oxford Healthspan, this webcast continues the Project’s mission to make the latest longevity and autophagy research accessible to the public.

Highlights Include
00:00 – Introduction: Professor Denis Noble frames the discussion, connecting the science of cellular renewal to cardiovascular longevity.
04:09 – Dr Junichi Sadoshima:
Explains how autophagy and mitophagy protect cardiac cells during stress, nutrient deprivation, and ageing.
Shares pioneering work revealing that suppression of autophagy by mTOR and Mst1 contributes to heart failure.
Discusses recent discoveries on how autophagy clears damaged mitochondria, reducing cardiac injury and improving function.
Draws from over 69 publications and leadership roles including Associate Editor of Autophagy and organiser of international symposia on mitochondrial biology.
46:07 – Professor Robin Choudhury:
Examines the role of innate immune cells — monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils — in heart injury, repair, and regeneration.
Explores how inflammation, metabolism, and autophagy intersect in cardiovascular ageing.
Describes his translational research at the University of Oxford and John Radcliffe Hospital, and collaborative work through the MeRIAD consortium.

About the Speakers
Professor Denis Noble CBE FRS
Co-founder of the Oxford Longevity Project and Emeritus Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford. A pioneer of systems biology, Professor Noble introduces the webcast, highlighting how autophagy connects cellular function with whole-organ health.
Dr Junichi Sadoshima
Professor and Chair, Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. A global leader in cardiac autophagy, his research has revealed how the regulation of autophagy and mitophagy affects heart failure, ischemia, and metabolic stress.
Professor Robin Choudhury
Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and Research Fellow in Biomedical Sciences at Balliol College. His work investigates how immune cell programming and metabolism influence heart disease and recovery.
