STORYLINE

China's Communist Party Congress convened amid tight security on Friday, drawing more than two thousand delegates together to steer the nation through breakneck changes and introduce a new generation of leaders.

President and party leader Jiang Zemin, his retirement almost certainly at hand, used the occasion to draw a broad blueprint for his country's future.

Most expect Jiang, aged 76, to be succeeded as Communist Party leader by Hu Jintao, aged 59, who also is widely expected to replace Jiang as president next year.


Jiang strode into the congress hall ahead of a column of leaders.

Four behind him, in the usual stringent order of Chinese politics, was Hu.
