Mr. Charlie: "I had no idea what to expect from Mr. Conrad as I only knew of him from his connection to the pre-Velvet Underground band The Primitives and that he found the discarded paperback in the street whose title caused the Falling Spikes / Warlocks / etc. to change their name to the Velvet Underground.

“I was fascinated by his performance, mainly because I couldn't tell if it was a deliberate challenge to the audience or merely a well played drone (or both.) I was actually there to see Gastr del Sol, but wanted to check out Mr. Conrad as well.

"Jerry, the T.T.'s soundman, had been given permission by Mr. Conrad to manipulate the amplitude of the performance as he saw fit, throwing in that chance element which in turn probably made each of Mr. Conrad's performances unique. This was used to wonderful effect when some members of the audience began to howl in response to the drone, with soundman Jerry Faison manipulating the volume and the howlers responding in turn. I found this to be fun and pretty cool, but the person you will hear shouting at them to shut up was Glenn Jones, then of Cul de Sac. Thankfully, the howlers ignored him.

"When I spoke with Mr. Conrad after the performance, he was delighted to hear that some of the audience members had interacted with and responded to the music. He also got upset when I told him Glenn had tried to get them to stop. 'Oh! I love it when the audience reacts! Why would he tell them to shut up?' Mr. Conrad was a gracious and lovely man for sure.

"I realize now that culturally it was pretty significant that T.T.'s was full on this night. I feel very lucky to have attended this show."
