In Canada provinces like Alberta and British Columbia and sometimes Ontario experience wildfires, and wildfires are usually common between May and September and sometimes earlier in some parts of Canada. In 2023, all of the
Canadian provinces were affected by wildfires.
Wildfires can cause extensive damages to property and can also put lives in danger. The best way to protect yourself and your family in the case of a wildfire is to
follow these following steps:
1) Stay informed – by that you want to Monitor weather, listen to local authorities
and prepare to evacuate if you need to evacuate.
2) Keep your vehicle fueled because if you have to evacuate, you will not have
time to fill up your vehicle with gas;
3) Follow instructions to evacuate, bring your emergency kit; and
4) Only re-enter your home when instructed by officials and community leaders.
If you live in an area that is prone to wildfire you should always plan before hand in order to stay safe and have an emergency plan in place. You should tune in to the radio or your local news channels, and/or follow your local news outlets and emergency officials on social media for possible wildfire alerts.
You need to make sure that your home insurance covers damages due tom fires.
The government of Canada’s has Canadian Wildland Fire information system is easily accessible online and it is a fire management information system that monitors fire danger conditions across Canda 24 hours a day 7 days a week and it also includes an interactive fire map and up-to-date reports on the fire situation across Canada. It displays colours that indicate the level of fire danger from being low to being extreme.
In some cases, government assistance may be available to individuals and
businesses affected by fires.
For example during the 2023 wildfire season in Canada the government had Work-Sharing Special Measures in order to support businesses affected by the 2023 wildfires occurring in multiple regions across Canada
Which dealt with Employers experiencing a decline in business activity attributable to the 2023 wildfires in Canada can be eligible for Work-Sharing Wildfire Special
Measures if they:
are located in the affected areas, and/or
have major customers and/or major suppliers located in the affected areas
